Song of The Day: The Staple Singers - Who Took the Merry Out of Christmas
Friday, November 25, 2011
We told you we'd be going down a less travelled Christmas over
the next couple of days but that was never meant to mean that we'd
dropped our standards. And if this early 1970's track from the Staple
Singers is anything to go by there would seem to be more gold in
thar obscurities than in the ones we embrace wholeheartedly each
year. The Staple Singers sang straight from the Motown songbook and
their Christmas single is a remarkably strong effort that could've
done brisk business at any time of the year. There is bags of
attitude and plenty of tight instrumental dynamics on this one.
