Jars of Clay Christmas Songs & Music

The soulful rock of Christian band Jars of Clay appeals to fans both with and without religious sensibilities. Active since the mid nineties, the group had previously turned in a few Christmas singles here and there. Their original Christmas for Cowboys appeared on the 2004 compilation Maybe This Christmas Tree, whilst their cover of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear was included on the collection Come Let Us Adore Him; A Christmas Worship Experience. However, it was not until 2007- and the creation of their own recording label- that Jars of Clay's first holiday album appeared.

2007: Christmas Songs

Jars of Clay combine some of their favourite carols with their Christmas themed originals on this, their one and only full length holiday album. Not surprisingly, the collection is devoid of secular classics, focusing instead on traditional carols like I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Jars of Clay does wonders with O Little Town of Bethlehem, completely rearranging the melody to create a haunting and fresh rendition, whilst their original instrumental tracks Winter Skin and Evergreen are dark and enchanting. The group adds a little nostalgia with their fifties inspired original Hibernation Day, alongside a memorable cover of Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime. Whilst Christmas Songs isn’t about to have you rocking around the Christmas tree, it is an original and uplifting alternative if you’re looking for something different this season.
