Jimi Hendrix Christmas Songs & Music

As possibly the greatest guitarist of all time, Jimi Hendrix was known for his own brand of psychedelic and funk rock. Even after his tragic death in 1970, Hendrix albums continued to pour out, including one well hidden Christmas themed EP. Though something of an oddity, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year features enough Hendrix magic to bring a little holiday cheer.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

1999: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

This posthumously released EP features three seasonal tracks recorded live in 1969. The opening medley of Little Drummer Boy, Silent Night and Auld Lang Syne features plenty of trademark Hendrix guitar magic. An extended version of this track also rounds out the album. Squeezed in between the two medleys is a bizarre recording of Three Little Bears. Totally out of place in a Christmas album, this track seems to have been slipped into the mix through lack of having anywhere else to go. Sounding more like a jam session than a serious recording Three Little Bears seems to have missed the cut as far as making it onto any studio album. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year is certainly an interesting little gem and whilst it probably won’t be the album of choice for the casual Hendrix listener, it’s a great addition to any die-hard fan’s collection.
