John Denver Christmas Albums

Rocky Mountain Christmas

1975: Rocky Mountain Christmas

John Denver had released nine studio albums before Rocky Mountain Christmas appeared in 1975, meaning his trademark folk style was firmly entrenched in American pop culture. Denver combines simplistic guitar accompaniments with more unusual instrumentation including mandolin, celesta and a tack piano, creating a unique, inimitable sound. Rocky Mountain Christmas is a combination of classics like Away in a Manger and touching originals like Aspenglow and Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas). The result is a hauntingly beautiful collection of songs, perfect for a relaxed Christmas Eve in front of the fire.

John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together

1979: John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together

Denver decided to mix things up for his second holiday album, collaborating with The Muppets for a television special and soundtrack album. The result is a hugely enjoyable romp through thirteen Christmas classics. Denver’s trademark poignancy is present in Silent Night and The Peace Carol, whilst the Muppets let loose for raucous renditions of We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Deck the Halls. The banter between Denver and his co-stars in priceless, whilst witty lyric substitutions make this album loads of fun for all ages.

Christmas, Like a Lullaby

1990: Christmas, Like a Lullaby

This album, as the title suggests, is the ideal soundtrack for the silly season’s quieter moments. With the exception of Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Christmas, Like a Lullaby is a peaceful and introspective collection. Denver again combines traditional carols with his own originals, most notably in this case, the lyrical title track. With simplistic arrangements and hauntingly beautiful falsetto, Christmas, Like a Lullaby is the perfect tonic to a chaotic December.
