1972: Christmas With Nana Mouskouri

Even in her first English Christmas album, Nana Mouskouri displays her linguistic talents with carols in French, German and Spanish. There are appearances by a few well-known carols, like Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly and The Little Drummer Boy as well as a number of beautiful pieces like Petit Papa Noel that are less familiar to an English speaking audience. Mouskouri’s gentle voice is perfectly suited to the carols she has selected for this album and she manages to create a sense of stillness and magic in each one of the tracks.

Released in the last few years of Mouskouri’s career, this holiday album serves as a greatest hits compilation of the singer’s seasonal recordings. Tracks from Christmas With Nana Mouskouri are present, along with numerous pieces from her French, Greek and German yuletide releases. Throughout the album, Mouskouri demonstrates why she was such a huge star across Europe, with spellbinding renditions of twenty-four carols and hymns. Mouskouri’s Lullaby is particularly enchanting, as is her rendition of Silent Night, performed in its original German.
