Phil Spector Christmas Songs & Music

Phil Spector's claim to fame is the development of the Wall of Sound production method. His trademark technique involved recording large groups of instrumentalists playing in unison to create a full, layered sound. Spector also often used orchestral instruments in his rock arrangements, creating a distinct, reverberant effect that worked a treat when broadcast across radios and jukeboxes. When Spector gave the Wall of Sound treatment to Christmas music back in 1963, the result was a spectacular album that is still talked about today.

1963: A Christmas Gift to You From Philles Records

Phil Spector called on some of the biggest names in the industry to make this iconic holiday album. Artists such as Darlene Love, The Crystals and The Ronettes all contribute to this predominantly secular Christmas collection. Now a holiday classic, Darlene Love’s Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) first appeared on this album, while The Ronettes’ cover of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus still garners airplay each December. The group’s catchy backing vocals in Sleigh Ride have now become iconic, whilst Bruce Springsteen modelled his cover of Santa Claus is Coming to Town on The Crystals’ Wall of Sound rendition. This album has been re-released more than ten times and is now more commonly known as A Christmas Gift to You From Phil Spector. In 2003, the record was ranked 142 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time; not too bad an effort for a collection of old Christmas favourites!
