2000 Miles
Year: 1983
Written By: Chrissie Hynde
English post-punk outfit the Pretenders released
'2000 Miles' in 1983 and despite only being the b-side on the US
release of their 'Middle of the Road' single it has since attained
the status of classic Christmas single, appearing on countless
festive compilations throughout the years. In the UK the song was a
standalone release and reached number 15 in charts in December of
1983.
'2000 Miles' was written about James
Honeyman-Scott, one of the Pretenders original guitar players who
died of heart failure in the summer of 1982. Chrissie Hynde turns
in a soft velveteen performance, which given her trademark snarl
just showed how much the band had missed Honeyman-Scott. The
guitars are circular and twinkly, like a forest of fairy lights and
with Hynde affecting vocals it makes for perfect Christmas
fare.
'2000 Miles' has been covered many times, most
notably by Coldplay (2003), KT Tunstall (2007) and the Mighty
Mighty Bosstones (2010).
2000 Miles Lyrics
She's gone 2000 miles, it's very far
The snow came down
Get's colder day by day, I miss her
I hear children singin'
It felt like Christmas time
In these frozen and silent nights
Sometimes in a dream you appear
Outside under the purple sky
Diamonds in the snow sparkle
And our hearts were singin'
It felt like Christmas time
2000 miles is very far through the snow
I think of you wherever you go
2000 miles is very far through the snow
I think of you wherever you go
She's gone 2000 miles, it's very far
The snow came falling now
Get's colder day by day, I miss you
I hear people singin'
It felt like Christmas time
I hear people singin'
It felt like Christmas time
I hear people singin'
It felt like Christmas time
I hear people singin'
It felt like Christmas time
