A Baby Just Like You
Year: 1975
Written By: John Denver, Joe Henry
John Denver may have written the sweet Christmas
tune 'A Baby Just Like You' at Frank Sinatra's request but there is
no doubt he used the song to great effect himself. 'A Baby Just
Like You' contains personal lyrics that marked the arrival of
Denver's new son Zachery. It went on to appear on several of the
bard's albums including 1975's 'Rocky Mountain Christmas' and
1979's 'A Christmas Together'. The latter version had one minor
change, from the earlier recording, with Denver memorably teaming
up with the cast of the Muppets on the final chorus. 'A Baby Just
Like You' is a gentle affair with plucked acoustics and themes
espousing traditional values. It won't get your party started but
it might tidy up the mess afterwards.
Frank Sinatra's take on 'A Baby Just Like You'
may have had different different lyrics to Denver's version but it
adopted a similarly hushed demeanour. You'll rarely hear Sinatra in
such introspective mood and it makes a nice counterpoint to his
usual richly bombastic approach. The song was released by the
Reprise record label in 1975 as a 7-inch single and was back up by
the oddly spelt 'Christmas Mem'ries' on the b-side.
A Baby Just Like You Lyrics
The season is upon us now
A time for gifts and giving
And as the year draws to its close
I think about my living
The Christmas time when I was young,
The magic and the wonder,
But colors dull and candles dim,
And dark my standing under
O little Zachary, shining light
You've set my soul to dreaming
You've given back my joy in life
A Savior King was born that day,
A baby just like you,
And as the Magi came with gifts,
I come with my gift too
That peace on Earth fills up your time,
That brotherhood surrounds you.
That you may know the warmth of love,
And wrap it all around you
It's just a wish, a dream I'm told
From days when I was young
Merry Christmas, little Zachary
Merry Christmas, everyone
Merry Christmas, little Zachary
Merry Christmas, everyone
