A Holly Jolly Christmas Christmas Song

A Holly Jolly Christmas

Year: 1964

Written By: Johnny Marks

If you wish to uncover the source for many of the songs that soundtrack Christmas through the years, then look no further than composer Johnny Marks who has a roll call of festive jollies to his name. 'Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer', 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree', 'Run Rudolf Run' and 'A Holly Jolly Christmas' were all written by the New Yorker between 1949 and 1964.

'A Holly Jolly Christmas' arrived in 1964 when Marks was commissioned to supply the music to a stop motion TV programme called 'Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer'. Burl Ives (Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives to give him his full title!) supplied the voice to the character Sam The Snowman who sang 'A Holly Jolly Christmas'. Such was its success that Ives subsequently recorded the song for an official release (the album 'Have A Holly Jolly Christmas') the following Christmas and it has been with us ever since. Much of the appeal in Ives performance must be that he comes across as the kindly grandfather type, you know the one, with monstrous belly, hearty laughter and weighed down with gifts for the whole family. You know he'll be asleep as soon as desert is over but no one else can celebrate this time of year like the old man belting out 'A Holly Jolly Christmas'.

Other artists to record 'A Holly Jolly Christmas' include Alan Jackson, Lawrence Welk, Mandy Barnett, Sugarland and Dora the Explorer!

A Holly Jolly Christmas Lyrics

Have a holly jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year
Well I don't know if there'll be snow
But have a cup of cheer

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet

Ho ho the mistletoe
Hung where you can see
Somebody waits for you
Kiss her once for me

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh bygolly have a holly jolly Christmas
This year

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh bygolly have a holly jolly Christmas
This year
