This poem by Helen Taylor from the 1920's is more traditionally associated with the US holiday of Thanksgiving but given its proximity to Christmas it works quite well for that occasion too. The artist most frequently associated with it is Perry Como but there are a good number of memorable renditions by other artists such as acclaimed gospel singer Mahalia Jackson whose version was the title track for her 1956 album. 8 years later it was Doris Day's turn to add her sparkle to the domestic homily and she did so with her usual pzazz. Rosemary Clooney also recorded the song, a few years before she was to appear alongside Bing Crosby in the movie 'White Christmas'.

Other versions have appeared down through the years by Irish balladeers Foster & Allen, their brethren the Fureys and Davey Arthur and a wonderful orchestral backed reworking by Dame Vera Lynn.

Bless This House Lyrics

Bless this house, O Lord we pray,
Make it safe by night and day . . .

Bless these walls so firm and stout,
Keeping want and trouble out . . .

Bless the roof and chimneys tall,
Let thy peace lie overall . . .

Bless this door that it may prove,
Ever open,
To joy and love . . .

Bless these windows shining bright,
Letting in God's Heavenly light,
Bless the hearth, ablazing there,

With smoke ascending like a prayer!

Bless the people here within,
Keep them pure and free from sin . . .

Bless us all that we may be,
Fit O Lord to dwell with thee . . .

Bless us all that one day we may dwell,
O Lord! With Thee!
