Oddness abounds in
the story of the Beach Boys, much genius music too it must be said
and both world's collided on 'Child of Winter'. This single was
released on the 23rd of December 1974, thereby giving
itself absolutely no chance of ever being a hit. Who knows why it
was held back for so long but given it was intended for a Christmas
album that the Beach Boys never officially released ('Merry
Christmas With The Beach Boys') it seemed like an altogether
consistent modus operandi. You'll get that 'Child of Winter'
borrows heavily from 'Here Comes Santa Claus' but nothing can take
away from the infectious joy of this hard to find recording (it did
surface on the 'Beach Boys Ultimate Christmas' many years after its
release). Brian Wilson proves what a good sport he is too with his
madcap voice about half way through.
