Happy Christmas (War Is Over) Christmas Song

Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

Year: 1969

Written By: John Lennon, Yoko

Happy Christmas (War is over) came at a time when America was in great turmoil. The Vietnam War was raging and things were not much better on the home front. Many did not believe in what the government was doing over in Vietnam and were quite vocal while showing it. The world seemed to be an awful place and nothing was going to make it better any time soon.

John Lennon and Yoko were peace-loving musicians and really wanted to make a difference. All they wanted was the war to be over and peace to reign once again; especially for Christmas. In Late 1969, the Lennon's rented several billboards and made 1000's of posters, which they preceded to plaster all over eleven major cities to try and drive their point home. The billboards and posters simply read "War is over (if you want it). Happy Christmas John and Yoko.

The song Happy Christmas (War is over) wasn't written until 1971 by John Lennon and Yoko Ono and released in the same year. Some of the words for the song came straight from the billboards that they had erected in 1969. The Lennon's were still trying to make a difference and stop the war. John, Yoko and the Plastic Ono band sang the song. The boys from the Harlem Community choir sang back up for Happy Christmas. The song starts out with John and Yoko telling their children and each other Happy Christmas and goes from there.

Although the song was released in the US in 1971, release of it was delayed until 1972 in Britain. When released it hit the charts and soared to number 4. It was released on an album for Record Plant Studios in Oct. 1971 and Apple Studios in December 1971.

Although the song was popular and came at a time when America needed all of the hope it could get the song never hit the charts here with Lennon and Ono singing it. It has been re recorded many times. The most popular and most remembered version was released online by The Fray in Dec. 2006. It made it to number 50 on the US Billboard hot 100.

Happy Christmas (war is over) was re released in the UK on December 20, 1980 after the tragic murder of John Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980. It soared to number 2 on the charts at that time. While not being the most popular Christmas song today it has still touched the hearts of millions at one time or another.

Happy Christmas (War Is Over) Lyrics

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas (War is Over, if you want it, war is over now)repeat with verse
For weak and for strong
The rich and the poor ones
The road is so long
So happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas (War is over, if you want it, war is over now) repeat with verse
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
And we hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over, if you want it
War is over now

Merry Christmas
