I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day
Year: 1973
Written By: Wizzard
This track is a well-known popular Christmas song which appears
to have featured a rebirth in popularity as it has re-entered the
UK Chart top 50 since December 2007 every December despite not
being re-released.
The song 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' was released by
the rock band; Wizzard. The band was formed in Birmingham by Roy
Wood who was previously in the Electric Light Orchestra. Roy Wood
was the author of this Christmas hit.
Despite being considered one of the best Christmas songs to ever
reach our ears, it has never reached number 1 in the charts,
leading to many fans of this song describing it as one of the best
songs to never be number one. First released back in 1973, this hit
was beaten to number one by another sensational Christmas song,
which is 'Merry Christmas Everybody' by Slade. This Slade classic
sat top of the charts for five weeks in all. 'I Wish It Could Be
Christmas Everyday' succeeded in reaching number 4 in the UK
Singles Chart, this was to be the highest position this track ever
achieved to date.
The music video Wizzard created for this song features Roy Wood
on lead vocals, being supported by backing vocals from The
Suedettes. The video also features a role from The Stockland Green
Bilateral School First Year, with the record sleeve crediting a
performance as well from 'Miss Snob and Class 3C'. Instead of being
recorded in the Christmas period, it was instead recorded in
August. Vocalist Roy Wood is said to have found the woollen hat for
the video in lost property.
Due to a number of reasons, with one main factor being that this
catchy tune did not originally reach number one, Wizzard decided to
re-release the track. It was released on two occasions (1981 and
1984) in the hope of becoming number one, however both attempts
didn't quite make it. The 1981 the re-release only reached number
41 in the UK Charts and the 1984 re-release, this time accompanied
with a 12" version earned a position of number 23.
This festive track has been covered by many artists, both by
successful bands, for example Westlife and also by aspiring
musicians, such as Eoghan Quigg while he was appearing on the UK
X-Factor competition. Other notable bands who have covered this
track are; The Saturdays and Girls Aloud.
I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day Lyrics
When the snowman brings the snow
Well he just might like to know
He's put a great big smile on somebody's face
If you jump into your bed
Quickly cover up your head
Don't you lock the doors
You know that sweet Santa Claus in on the way
[Chorus]
Well I wish it could be Christmas every day
When the kids start singing and the band begins to play
Oh I wish it could be Christmas every day
So let the bells ring out for Christmas
When we're skating in the park
If the snow cloud makes it dark
Then your rosy cheek's gonna light my merry way
Now the frosty paws appear
And they've frozen up my beard
So we'll lie by the fire
'Til the sleet simply knocks 'em all away
[Chorus]
When the snowman brings the snow (snowman brings the snow)
Well he just might like to know (just might like to know)
He's put a great big smile on somebody's face
So if Santa brings that sleigh (Santa brings that sleigh)
All along the Milky Way (along the Milky Way)
I'll sign my name on the rooftop in the snow
Then he may decide to stay
[Chorus] x2
Why don't you give your love for christmas
When the snowman brings the snow x8
