Last Christmas

Year: 1984

Written By: George Michael

The beautiful track, 'Last Christmas' was produced by popular pop duo, Wham!. The song was written by George Michael, who is one half of Wham! with the other member of the duo being Andrew Ridgeley. The song was released in time for the Christmas of 1984, being released in December.

Both member of the British duo, Wham! feature in the music video for 'Last Christmas'. (George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley) They are filmed as if they are travelling with their on screen lovers travelling to a ski resort. The video also features Shirlie and Pepsi, the recognised backing singer's for the group. There is also a special appearance from Martin Kemp, a member of Spandau Ballet. The video hints that Ridgeley's girlfriend was previously a lover of Michael's in the story and that the focus of the song is Michael's thoughts and interests towards her.

The battle for the Christmas number one in the UK Singles Chart for 1984 was always going to be hotly contested, and news that Wham! were producing a Christmas single as well only added to the excitement of who could win the number one spot. The competition Wham! faced came from Frankie Goes to Hollywood with 'The Power of Love' and a charity single from Band Aid, (led by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure) called 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'. The Band Aid single ended up winning the race for Christmas number one with Wham! peaking in the number two spot. This was a great success for the duo, and George Michael had further success in the 1984 Christmas number one race as he featured in the Band Aid song as one of the singer's. As well as reaching number two in the UK Singles Chart, 'Last Christmas' also reached number one of the Irish Singles Chart.

'Last Christmas' set a record due to its success, becoming the biggest selling single in the UK chart's history not to reach number one. The track is also the most successful Christmas single in Germany of all time, as it spent a record number of 88 weeks in the German Singles Chart. It has also been certified Gold in Germany and Platinum in the UK.

This Christmas hit has been covered by many other artists, from varying musical genres. Notable covers are from, Billie Piper, Cascada and Crazy Frog.

Last Christmas Lyrics

Chorus:

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognise me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me

(Happy Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

Chorus

(Oooh. Oooh Baby)

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Oooh Oooh
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

Chorus

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
(Gave you my heart)
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Next year
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
special
someone
someone
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
who'll give me something in return
I'll give it to someone
hold my heart and watch it burn
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
I've got you here to stay
I can love you for a day
I thought you were someone special
gave you my heart
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone
last christmas I gave you my heart
you gave it away
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone
