Lonely This Christmas
Year: 1974

Mud
released 'Lonely This Christmas' in 1974. The song was met with a
lot of success and the success of this song was topped off by not
only getting the song to reach UK number one, but also by getting
the song to win the 1974 title of Christmas number one. Mud are an
English glam rock band that were formed in 1966 and apart from
'Lonely This Christmas' were perhaps best remembered for their
single, 'Tiger Feet'. 'Lonely This Christmas' was both written and
produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Mike Chapman and Nicky
Chinn were more than just a formidable partnership when it came to
writing and production. The two of them were excellent together and
extremely high regarded, this is because they had so much chart
success when working together, and this is very apparent in in 1974
as together Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn managed to write and
produce three songs that would become number one just for 1974.
'Lonely This Christmas' was their third single which hit the number
one spot for that year.
The
Christmas gentle classic was successful, especially in the UK,
where it was number one. 'Lonely This Christmas' was number one for
four weeks in the UK from December 1974 to January 1975 meaning
that 'Lonely This Christmas was the 1974 Christmas number
one.
The
performance and style of this song is in the style of Elvis
Presley, especially linked to the later part of Elvis Presley's
career. In the video, the lead singer, Les Gray has an appearance
similar to that of Elvis Presley and his vocal performance is also
similar to that of the King of Rock and Roll. Due to massive
similarities in this song to Elvis Presley, the Christmas song is
often attributed to Elvis Presley.
Mud gave a
very memorable performance of 'Lonely This Christmas' on Top of the
Pops. When giving this performance, guitarist Rob Davis was wearing
Christmas baubles for earrings and was draped in tinsel while Les
Gray, who is lead vocalist, was singing while holding and on
occasions using a ventriloquist dummy to sing parts of the
song.
The
immense popularity of this song has meant it is covered by a
variety of artists on differing occasions. Notable covers of
'Lonely This Christmas' have come from Blue and KT
Tunstall.
Lonely This Christmas Lyrics
Try to imagine
A house that's not a home
Try to imagine
A Christmas all alone
That's where I'll be
Since you left me
My tears could melt the snow
What can I do without you?
I got no place, no place to go
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold
It'll be cold, so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas
Each time I remember
The day you went away
and how I would listen
to the things you had to say
I just break down
as I look around
and the only things I see
are loneliness and emptyness
and an unlit Christmas tree
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold
It'll be cold, so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas
Do You remember last year
When You and I were together
We never thought there'd be an end
and I rember looking at you then
and I remember thinking
That Chrismas must have been made for us
Cause Darling this is the time of year
That you really, you really need love
When it means so very, very much
So it'll be so lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It'll be so very lonely
Lonely and cold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Without you to hold
It'll be lonely this Christmas
Lonely and cold
It'll be cold, so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas
It'll be cold, so cold
Without you to hold
This Christmas
Merry Chrismas, Darling
Wherever you are
