Sleigh Ride
Year: 1946
Written By: Leroy Anderson, Mitchell Parish
The song Sleigh Ride is a popular musical piece composed by
Leroy Anderson during a heat wave in the summer of 1946. The
musical score, which took 2 years to write, was finished in
1948. The first recording was done in 1949 by Arthur Fieldler
and The Boston Pops Orchestra. Over time, this song became
known as The Boston Pops "signature" song. In 1950, Mitchell
Parish wrote the lyrics to the song.
Although many people associate Sleigh Ride with Christmas, the
original lyrics of the song never mention Christmas or any other
holiday for that matter. Recently, some performing artists have
changed the wording of one of the stanzas of the song and use the
phrase "Christmas party" instead of "birthday party" probably due
to the fact that the song is largely played during the Christmas
season.
The lyrics for the song Sleigh Ride also mention "pumpkin
pie". This fact has led some people to argue that the song is
in fact about the holiday of Thanksgiving, not Christmas.
Detractors of this theory quickly note that pumpkin pie is also
served at Christmas time as well as during the Thanksgiving
holiday.
Sleigh Ride also mentions "Currier and Ives". This company
was a very popular American printing company located in New York
City which was owned by Nathaniel Currier and James
Ives. Known for its wonderfully detailed yet
inexpensive prints and pictures, Currier and Ives closed in 1907,
decades before the song was written. However, most Americans in the
1940's and 1950's would have understood the reference.
According to the American Society of Composers, Authors, and
Publishers, Sleigh Ride, is on the list of the top 10 most
performed Christmas songs. In 2010, the song was named the
most popular song in the USA. Many artists have performed the song
including Neil Diamond, Andy Williams, The Spice Girls, Kenny G,
and The Carpenters.
Sleigh Ride Lyrics
Just hear those sleigh bells jingling,
ring ting tingling too…
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you.
Outside the snow is falling
and friends are calling "yoo hoo"…
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you.
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up,
let's go… Let's look at the show…
We're riding in a wonderland of snow.
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up,
it's grand… Just holding your hand…
We're gliding along with a song
of a wintry fairy land.
Our cheeks are nice and rosy
and comfy cozy are we…
We're snuggled up together
like two birds of a feather would be…
Let's take that road before us
and sing a chorus or two…
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you.
There's a birthday party
at the home of Farmer Gray…
It'll be the perfect ending a of perfect day.
We'll be singing the songs
we love to sing without a single stop…
At the fireplace while we watch
the chestnuts pop… Pop! pop! pop!
There's a happy feeling
nothing in the world can buy…
When they pass around the coffee
and the pumpkin pie.
It'll nearly be like a picture print
by Currier and Ives…
These wonderful things are the things
we remember all through our lives!
Just hear those sleigh bells jingling,
ring ting tingling too…
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you.
Outside the snow is falling
and friends are calling "yoo hoo"…
Come on, it's lovely weather
for a sleigh ride together with you.
It's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you…
It's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.
