Step Into Christmas Christmas Song

Step Into Christmas

Year: 1973

Written By: Bernie Taupin

Released in 1973, 'Step into Christmas' was a successful Christmas song by Elton John. Although 'Step into Christmas' is Elton John's song, the lyrics actually came from Bernie Taupin, but the music did come from Elton John. This Christmas song was released in 1973 as a stand-alone single, and was accompanied by the B-side 'Ho! Ho! Ho! (Who'd Be a Turkey at Christmas)'. Both 'Step into Christmas' and its B-side were produced by Gus Dudgeon.

As well as its original stand-alone single release in 1973, it was also later released, but this time as a bonus track on the 1995 remastered issue of the album 'Caribou'. Apart from appearing on 'Caribou', 'Step into Christmas' also appears on 'Elton John's Christmas Party'.

The production of 'Step into Christmas' was an attempt to make a sound, similar to that of Phil Spector's record. This was done by using a lot of compression and imitating his trademark 'wall of sound' technique. When listening to different versions of 'Step into Christmas', you can hear obvious differences in the vocals, from the standalone song, to the promotional video. Both 'Step into Christmas' and the B-side with it, 'Ho! Ho! Ho! (Who'd Be a Turkey at Christmas)' were recorded in session at Morgan Studios in London. Morgan Studios is owned by drummer Barry Morgan. Barry Morgan coincidently played on many of Elton John's early albums.

'Step into Christmas' achieved a respectable position in the UK charts, managing to reach the peak position of number 23 in the charts. Elton John's Christmas track had even better success, reaching number one on a specially designed Christmas chart. 'Step into Christmas' also managed to feature in the Cashbox Top 100 charts. However, it was not able to achieve the same success on Billboards; this was because the magazine's editorial policy held the Christmas song off the Hot 100. 'Step into Christmas' has very much remained a favourite in the hearts of Christmas festive music lovers, this is statistically evident in that 'Step into Christmas' was the ninth most played Christmas song in the UK in 2009.

Elton John's 1973 Christmas release has been covered on a few occasions, most memorable version has come from The Wedding Present, and this cover was put on their 1992 album 'Hit Parade II'.

Step Into Christmas Lyrics

Welcome to my Christmas song
I'd like to thank you for the year
So I'm sending you this Christmas card
To say it's nice to have you here
I'd like to sing about all the things
Your eyes and mind can see
So hop aboard the turntable
Oh step into Christmas with me(ohh)

Step into Christmas
Let's get together
We can watch the snow fall forever and ever
Eat and drink and be merry
Come along with me
Step into Christmas
The admission's free(hold on)

Take care in all you do next year
And keep smiling through the days
If we can help to entertain you
Oh we will find the ways
So merry Christmas one and all
There's no place I'd rather be
Than asking you if you'd oblige
Stepping into Christmas with me
