Classical Christmas Songs


If you're looking for something a little more classical in terms of Christmas music this year, or if you're bored of the usual saccharine sweet Christmas music, why not try something from our list of classical Christmas songs? Comprising of a mixture of symphonic music, orchestral numbers and choral numbers, this Christmas compilation is perfect for unwinding to at the end of a long day. All of the music on this list is also very family friendly, so try these tunes if you're looking for something a little more suitable for the whole family this year.

1) Orchestra Manhattan - The Christmas Song

This lovely cover of Nat King Cole's classic is taken from Orchestra Manhattan's Digital Christmas album. It's a lovely laidback, jazzy version of the classic, full of plinky plonky piano. Perfect for playing whilst you eat Christmas dinner.

2) Arthur Fielder and the Boston Pops - Little Drummer Boy

Arthur Fielder was a conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra for a number of years, and was both praised and criticised for popularizing the orchestra's music, especially when they adapted popular songs. This version of classic song Little Drummer Boy is a light, building version that it still very traditional.

3) A Charlie Brown Christmas - Linus & Lucy

If you're a fan of Charlie Brown, you'll love this album full of classics from the show. Perfect for sticking on if you're feeling nostalgic for your youth, our favourite song from the album is Linus & Lucy but the whole record is packed full of classics.

4) Beegie Adair - Frosty the Snowman

This jazz version of Frosty the Snowman, taken from Beegie Adair's Christmas jazz piano album is a brilliant version of the original - laidback, mellow and perfect for sitting back and listening to with a glass of mulled wine.

5) Robert Page with Temple University Choir - Silent Night, Holy Night

This is a wonderfully peaceful version of the classic Christmas carol Silent Night, Holy Night, with a rather lovely wind section and some sweeping violins. Listen to this if you want to relax into the Christmas spirit or if you're looking for slower-paced music this year.

6) Henry John Gauntlett - Once in Royal David's City

It can be truly lovely to get back to basics with your Christmas music and this choral version of Once in Royal David's City is a beautiful, breath-taking Christmas number.

7) Leroy Anderson - Sleigh Ride for Orchestra

This adaptation of Sleigh Ride is a lovely Christmassy romp - light, upbeat, up-tempo and is really a face-paced tune that will instantly have you feeling warm and Christmassy inside from the first few seconds. This song has also been used in a huge number of films and advertisements, so you'll definitely recognise it.

8) John Francis Walde - O Come All Ye Faithful

This stunning instrumental version of O Come All Ye Faithful is like a song of two halves - one part of the song is fast and frivolous violins, and the other part is deep trumpets for the chorus of the song - but the two blend together perfectly to create a lovely Christmassy tune. Another song to put on your Christmas driving playlist.

9) Ralph Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on Christmas Carols

Conducted by Ralph Vaughan Williams, an extremely talented conductor, we have a very traditional Christmas song 9th on our list, with a male voice choir and a low, low strings section. A stunning song to add to your Christmas playlist.

10) The Westminster Choir - I Wonder As I Wander

Westminster Choir is one of the top choirs in the whole of the United States, and they regularly perform with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. This version of I Wonder As I Wander is breath-taking in its simplicity and perfect for sticking on whilst you decorate the Christmas tree.

11) The Philadelphia Brass Ensemble - We Three Kings of Orient Are

This brass version of classic Christmas carol We Three Kings of Orient Are is a really different take on the usual string quartets and full orchestras you usually hear at this time of the year. Another classic for your driving playlist.

12) A Charlie Brown Christmas - Christmas is Coming

Another song from a Charlie Brown Christmas this time, Christmas is Coming is a familiar romp that will instantly transport you back to your youth.

13) Dale Warland Singers - Patapan

Choral group Dale Warland Singers are next on our list this time with this dramatic song full of sweeping, soaring vocals and a faint musical accompaniment. Sung by the Dale Warland Singers, a highly respected choral group, the warm and peaceful style of this song will mean you'll slip right into the Christmas spirit.

14) Christmas Traditional - Deck the Halls (Welsh)

A lovely orchestral version of yet another classic Christmas song, this version of Deck the Halls is uplifting, upbeat and very, very festive. Play it when you're sitting in front of the fire with a mug of cocoa, wrapped up in a blanket.

15) Adolpe Adam - Cantique de Noel

A stunning orchestral and choral number at number 15 on our list, this song will instantly transport you back to Christmases past. It's been used in film, in advertising and on the radio for years and so you'll immediately think happy, festive thoughts when you have a listen to this.
