70s Christmas Songs
The 1970's were a decade for change. Christmas carols seemed to
have died off a little during this decade, but there are still a
few notable songs that are forever classics. A few original
Christmas songs were recorded during this time period, as well as
updated versions of more traditional songs.
In 1970, the first recording of "Feliz Navidad" was heard. Other
original Christmas songs from the 1970's include, The Capenters'
"Merry Christmas, Darling" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by John
Lennon and Yoko Ono with the Harlem Community Choir. Other original
Christmas songs of this decade include, Elton John's "Step Into
Christmas", Merle Haggard's "If We Make It Through December", Donna
Hathaway's "This Christmas" and hilarious duo Cheech and Chong's
"Santa Claus And His Old Lady".
There were a few versions of previously recorded Christmas songs
during this decade. These popular songs include, The Jackson 5 and
their rendition of "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town" and The Singing
Dogs' version of "Jingle Bells".
When we look back on past generations, we see patterns forming
within genres of music. These 1970's Christmas songs have been a
part of our lives for decades and do not show any sign of being
forgotten anytime soon.
