Famous Christmas Songs
When thinking of Christmas songs, the most popular ones come to
mind first. These carols are a mix of classic and contemporary
tunes that have often been sung by well known artists throughout
the years.
Many classics have become favourites that are heard year after
year. The traditional Christmas carols seem to be the most well
known songs out of the bunch. One of the most successful holiday
staples is considered the Irving Berlin classic, "White Christmas".
When the talented Bing Crosby recorded this song in 1934, it became
the best selling single of all time. The well known wintery tune,
"Winter Wonderland", written in 1934, quickly became a Christmas
song despite the fact that the holiday is never directly mentioned.
Other famous traditional Christmas songs include "Jingle Bells",
"Silent Night", "Joy To The World" and the "The Little Drummer Boy"
which can be heard every year on the radio and during Christmas
specials on television.
Celebrities have made certain Christmas songs memorable simply
by performing them during their peak of fame. Respected artist,
John Lennon took a stab at writing a Christmas song which became an
instant classic. "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" remains a holiday
favourite among Christmas carols and continues to spread the
concept of world peace. Judy Garland's haunting rendition of "Have
Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", which appeared in the 1944
musical, 'Meet Me In St Louis', is still considered one of the most
popular Christmas songs of all time. The third time was the charm
for singer/songwriter, Nat King Cole, who co-wrote "The Christmas
Song" with Mel Torme. The song is rumoured to have been recorded by
Cole three times, with the recoding that was released in 1961 being
considered the best version. One of the Christmas season's most
traditional carol, "O Holy Night", has been sung by a plethora of
talented artists. Most notably, Canadian singer Celine Dion, has
recorded a version which many praise as one of the best recordings
of this song. A favourite among children, "Rudolph The Red Nosed
Reindeer" is a song that one can hear often on the radio during
Christmas time performed by 1998's boy band, NSYNC.
Most songs that are played during the Christmas season are
classics, while others are made famous by celebrities. Famous
holiday songs, whether traditional or not, will be heard at
home, in the churches, and in the streets for many Christmases
to come.
