Modern Christmas Songs

Most often, people define 'modern music' as any music that is from the rock and roll age and on. Any Christmas songs that are not traditional, can be called modern Christmas songs. Most of these modern songs are not religious and usually have aspects of the updated views of Christmas. Modern Christmas songs are not limited to songs that have been written in this era. Musical artists of today have also taken traditional Christmas carols and updated them to the current musical standard.

Modern Christmas songs can be both religious and secular. The majority of modern Christmas music focuses on the Christmas holiday, and not the underlying tones of Christianity. "Santa Baby", originally sung by Eartha Kitt and written by Joan Javits and Philip Springer, epitomizes the modern Christmas style. This song is a humorous way of looking at the materialistic side of Christmas rather than speaking about the nativity scene. To summarize, the song tells the story of a woman who is asking Santa Clause for many extravagant gifts such as a yacht and a ring. Another modern holiday song which focuses more on the holiday rather than the nativity would be Billy Hayes and Jay Johnson's, "Blue Christmas". It would be hard to forget Elvis Presley's sad rendition of this heart felt modern Christmas song. This tune tells the story of the sadness that one feels when they are without the one that they love during a happy holiday, such as Christmas. Other secular modern Christmas songs include, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey, "Christmas Time Is Here Again" by The Beatles, and the comical "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause", by Tommie Connor.

Christmas songs which are traditional have also been covered by artists in a modern way. These religious favourites are updated by popular artists which gives the next generation more exposure to traditional Christmas music. Famous artists, such as musical group Bony M., have created whole Christmas albums which have incorporated both modern and updated traditional Christmas music. Bony M. have recorded their own modern renditions of "Little Drummer Boy", "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" and "Feliz Navidad", while incorporating modern songs such as, "White Christmas". Other traditional songs which have been modernized include, Garth Brookes' "Go Tell It On The Mountain", Destiny's Child's "Carol Of The Bells", and Jim Reeves' "Silent Night".

In order to please everyone at your holiday party, it is a good idea to incorporate modern Christmas music, as well as traditional Christmas songs, into your holiday play list.
